Alaska Car Insurance Requirements
The main thing to keep in mind regarding Alaska Car Insurance is that by state law everyone that drives a car needs to have some kind of liability insurance up to date on their vehicle.
According to Alaska state law, insurance is defined as a policy that the person that owns the car has to purchase, with the onus falling on them to keep it up to date. Insurance policies end up covering the loss of property due to accident and in some cases the medical costs that might be incurred from an accident causing injury. If the insurance holder was not at fault for the accident and this is plain for all to see, then the insurance of the other driver is responsible for making sure that you end up paying nothing for replacement of the property and health.
The reasoning behind the mandatory insurance laws that are in place in Alaska was to make sure that people living in the state had some way of protecting themselves against accidents that took place with people that did not possess insurance. According to these laws, the minimum insurance that a person has to have needs to pay out at least $50,000 when a person suffers an injury or a fatality, $100,000 as a total amount for all injuries or fatalities sustained during the accident and $25,000 for damages to vehicles that were in the accident.
If you own a vehicle, you are required to show insurance to the police whenever it is requested and penalties for non-compliance with the mandatory insurance laws start at a 90 day suspension of your license and can go up to one year depending on the rest of your record including driving and insurance.
